Explore, Play, and Tinker Again! Create Art out of Anything.

The first adventure filled up almost immediately, so artist barry johnson is holding a second session to share ideas on creating art from found materials.

Johnson will lead a hands-on exploration of Seattle ReCreative, the Creative Reuse Store and Community Art Center. Learn about, and create artwork from reclaimed objects. And, through the practice of tinkering, learn new ways to think about how to solve problems and create all while having fun. Each participant will create a work of art out of recycled and reclaimed material that they can then bring home. Please wear clothing suitable for doing art.

Health Science Discovery Tour

Seattle is known as the Silicon Valley for saving lives. Join this tour to see how the Center for Infectious Disease Research is contributing to that reputation, and get a hands-on look at how science research for health is done.

Alexis Kaushansky (speaker at TEDxSeattle2016) and colleagues at the Center for Infectious Disease Research (CIDR) will be providing interactive learning tours of several of the labs with complementary expertise and specialties at this globally known research center. These tours will explore the tagline of CIDR and help give new experiences that shed light on People, Science, and Hope. This adventure will:

  • Allow you to experience a day in the life of Tuberculosis
  • Tour the Malaria Lab tour and mosquito dissection

Every year, nearly 4 million people die from the “Big Three” (HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria) infectious diseases. For real progress in combating these diseases and other infectious diseases, fundamental knowledge is still lacking. Successfully preventing and treating these infectious diseases will require, and will be dramatically hastened by, a deep scientific understanding of pathogen biology, the human immune system, and the interface between them. CIDR has a diverse group of researchers from many disciplines, and we are fortunate to all be working under the same roof and for the same global mission. Because of this, we utilize collaboration and come together to share strategies and knowledge. We aim to discover potential overlaps in disease functionality and to identify the grand challenges of infectious disease research. Together, we have greater potential to combat some of the world’s most devastating diseases.

Speaker Announcement Premier and Wine Tasting

In the spirit of our 2016 theme, “Greater Than” the Estates Wine Room has prepared a unique perspective for us: “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” Wine is an excellent example of this concept, and the Estates Wine Room even more so.

TEDxSeattle is excited to be partnering with Estates Wine Room to announce a handful of the TEDxSeattle 2016 Speakers along with a complimentary wine tasting journey through the Pacific Northwest.

Three wineries are represented at the Estates Wine Room. Individually, they are all exceptional producers of that poetry in a glass just described, but together offer visitors an experience that goes beyond a particular winery, beyond a particular region; we represent a comprehensive perspective of the range and quality that this broad area defined as the Pacific Northwest has to offer.”

Space is limited. Please RSVP ASAP!

Finding Bigfoot Hike and Overnight Camp

Come help us solve one of the greatest mysteries alive by channeling your inner field biologist as we hike alongside Animal Planet’s ‘Finding Bigfoot’ host Ranae Holland. Ranae is a field biologist who has traveled the globe in search of Bigfoot evidence, and has dedicated her life to educating people on how to decipher fact from myth using science.

We will start the day with an afternoon exploration hike under a canopy of trees alongside a river using all of the fun equipment a scientist would use while researching a natural phenomenon. Following our hike we will spend the evening cooking around a fire, listening to live music and hearing some of Ranae’s favorite Bigfoot stories. We will wrap up the adventure with breakfast around a fire and head home. This is sure to be a memory of a lifetime.

Meet at the Denny Creek Campground (near Snoqualmie), campsites 30,31,32.

What to bring: Active shoes, comfortable/active clothing, something to stay warm at night and a rain coat in case of rain, sleeping bag, pillow and tent.
